Purpose

The purpose of an annotated bibliography is to benefit the researcher. It will help you begin the research and writing process early in the course so you have the time to think about the project. It also gives you plenty of time to find the references you need, outline your thoughts, write, and revise your paper over numerous weeks instead of waiting for the last minute to begin.

Research is a process. For the journal articles, you should use the CBU library databases like Business Source Premier, not the “regular” Internet. In key word searches, you should NOT be researching a particular company or event. Instead, make sure that you research the *concept* or *topic* appropriate to your paper. This will allow you to find relevant and current (within the last 7 years) references from the library databases for your research.

You will look up and read/scan numerous articles. Some will be relevant to your paper. Others will not. Over time, you may notice trends in the literature or find conflicting arguments and findings. That is part of the process and is okay. Your key word search focus may change over time as you spend more time reading and thinking about the topics and concepts in your paper. As such, you may include information and references in the Annotated Bibliography that you do not include in your Detailed Outline or your final Research Paper. You can also add additional references, arguments, and support as you continue in the writing process. In other words, once you complete your Annotated Bibliography, you can add to it or take away from it anything you need to in order to write a high-quality final Research Paper.

Requirements

An annotated bibliography is a list of sources and includes APA formatted references to the articles, books, and resources (all which should have been found through the University Online Library databases) you use related to a research assignment. Following each APA formatted reference is a brief description and an evaluation of the source.

The Annotated Bibliography must be supported by a minimum of 4 unique references as follows

1 – Porter & Norton *OR* Berman & Knight textbook
3 – Peer-reviewed academic business or accounting journal articles (not books or textbooks) published within seven (7) years of the course start date

Any books, textbooks, or court cases you reference should be in addition to the required number and type of reference/articles (peer-reviewed academic business or accounting journal articles) listed above. The references should be in strict APA format.

You will provide an annotated bibliography with the minimum number of references you potentially plan to use for your paper. Each annotation should include the following items

Summary – Main points/findings of the article
Analysis – Evaluate the research (appropriateness, methodology, findings, etc.)
Reflection – Discuss how this article fits in to your research

Each annotation should be several paragraphs in length to appropriately summarize the content and provide an analysis of the relevance and quality of the source. Assess the article according to the focus of the research and provide criticisms. You may want to answer questions or address issues such as: Who is the author and how are they qualified? Reflect on the source and how it fits in the topic chosen to research. Is the source helpful? Is the article too broad or too narrow? Explain how this article will fit into your research paper. Explain how it relates to other articles you have read. Compare and contrast the results to other articles you have read as not all research reaches the same conclusion.

An annotation is NOT an abstract. Given that, DO NOT simply cut and past the abstract as the annotation since they are not the same. Abstracts are summaries of a source, whereas annotations include a short summary but also include an analysis of the research and reflection on how the article is relevant to the current research being performed. APA Format

The APA format for an annotated bibliography of a journal article is as follows:

Author Last Name, First Initial. Middle Initial. (year). Name of journal article. Name of Journal is Next, Volume Number(Issue Number), inclusive page numbers.

Include a brief summary, analysis, and reflection related to the article. This should be in paragraph form using full and complete sentences. The annotation should also have a paragraph indent and should be double spaced. The reference, in contrast, has a “hanging indent.” Make sure to use the Word ruler functions to format the references and annotations. If you do not know what a hanging indent is or how to adjust your ruler settings for a hanging indent, do a Google search for instructions.
