Gargantua And Pantagruel By Francois Rabelais Book Review

Humanism has been defined as the concern with the legacy of antiquity, and in particular the literary legacy. Thus a humanist education involved the rediscovery of the scholars of antiquity, and the related Greek and Roman texts. Rabelais takes great delight in parodying educational institutions in his writing, which he exhibits, for instance, in Panurge’s praise of debtors (422-30). His subjects and objects become lists, with numerous verbs to describe Charity’s rule. Rabelais’ “O happy world! O inhabitants of that happy world! O folk thrice and four times blessed!” (428) demonstrates his own classical education, as he echoes Virgil’s The Aeneid and specifically Aeneas’ cry during a storm. Briefly discuss an example of Rabelais’ use of parody in mocking one or more institutions of his time. What relevance do you see to our contemporary society, if any? Quote and cite the text to illustrate your assertions. Be detailed.
