Thus a humanist education involved the rediscovery of the scholars of antiquity, and the related Greek and Roman texts. Rabelais takes great delight in parodying educational institutions in his writing, which he exhibits, for instance, in Panurge’s praise of debtors (422-30). His subjects and objects become lists, with numerous verbs to describe Charity’s rule. Rabelais’ “O happy world! O inhabitants of that happy world! O folk thrice and four times blessed!” (428) demonstrates his own classical education, as he echoes Virgil’s The Aeneid and specifically Aeneas’ cry during a storm.
