Is Technology Good or Bad for Communication?
Part One: CMC and Relationships
Argue for or against the following statement:
“Communicatively competent relationships exist when the only form of communication / interaction is computer mediated.”
Discuss why you think this statement is true or false.
Use the concepts from earlier chapters that deal with communication competence and relationships (Ch 7 & 8) to compare to concepts covered in chapter 15 to back up your argument. Bold all concepts you use.
Part Two: Media Messages
Chose a current story/issue that is being covered in the media.
Pick three different forms of media (T.V., Radio, internet, blog, print which includes news papers, magazines, journals) to get information about the story/issue you choose.
Using the concepts from chapter 15 discuss your experience.
Did the story/issue come across the same or different and what implications do you think this has on those that are using these media to gain information.
Part Three: Are you scared?
After completing part one and two write a brief (one or two paragraphs) discussion of weather you have an optimistic or pessimistic view of the role of technology in communication and why.
You may also do something creative to complete part three like write a poem or song or create something that represents your thoughts.
Papers should be TYPED, double spaced and no less than 2 pages using adequate font (e.g., 12 pt. times new roman) and margins (1”). You need a cover page. You should proofread for errors in grammar, spelling, etc. as such errors represent your work as less professional and may lead to miscommunication.
All information used from the text book or outside sources that did not come from your own brain MUST be properly referenced in the text of the paper and on an attached reference page.
