The most important values on the list would be number 8 “Work gives me a feeling of Accomplishment.” This is true for I like to do a good job and make sure that I am earning the money that I make as honestly as I can. I try to keep a good work ethic and boost morale among co-workers. I also do not cheat on my time and work extra hours if needed. I feel that my parents have set this example for me because they worked hard. My Dad worked 24 years in the military, retired, went back to school, became a teacher, and then retired again after 20 years of teaching. If that isn’t hard I don’t know what is! This fits into the United States cultural pattern for pride in our country and our military being the strongest in the world. Number 17 is “People can make decisions for themselves.” I feel that this value is a part of how our dominant culture sees as an activity of freedom. Coming from a bi-racial family, this value is most important to my existence or I wouldn’t be here if you know what I mean. Number 24 is “I’m Willing to fight for my country.” My Dad was in the Air Force and I enjoyed being an Airforce dependent. I currently work for the Army as a DoD civilian. There is a saying that “Freedom isn’t Free” and we all can do our share to support our military which supports our unique way of life.

I feel these values do affect the way I communicate for I believe in common courtesy and respect. This does have a lot to do with how I relate to others interculturally. “Civil rights for all Americans-black, white, red, yellow, the rich, poor, young, old, gay, straight, et Cetera-is not a liberal or conservative value. It’s an American value that I would think that we pretty much all agree on. Reverend Jerry Falwell speaking to commentator Tucker Carlson on MSNBC’s The Situation ( Wolff, 2005)”( Jandt, 2013).
