I definitely believe there is such a thing as a bad leader. A bad leader is one that won’t lead, we’ve all heard the phrase “lead by example”. This is a very true statement because if a leader is lazy, cuts corners, or lies then their employees with have no faith or trust in them and will often times emulate that behavior lowering the performance for the whole team. The Myatt (2017) website says that a leader who lacks character or integrity will not last long. A bad leader is one that their employees cannot rely on or have confidence in. If a leader does not care about their people the employees will be able to tell and won’t work hard for them or go the extra mile to get the job done.

According to “Alan’s Gleanings” (2007), “A leader is “a person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a goal””. A leader has to have people under them whether it is a team or individual people who are working towards a common goal. The leader defines what the goals are and does everything they can to help their people achieve those goals.

According to “The Business Dictionary” (2017), “managers…have the power and responsibility to make decisions and oversee an enterprise”. Managers are not doing any of the actual ground work, they are doing all the upper level tasks involving the company as a whole. They provide any necessary guidance and direction to the leaders to disseminate to their followers.

These definitions affect me both as a follower and as a leader by giving me direction and purpose when I am in those positions myself. When I am leading I will not worry about upper level tasks and when I am in a manager position I will provide direction through the leaders and ensure higher level tasks are handled properly.

I just saw the movie Alien: Covenant, at the begging of the movie, the leader of the ship died, and the guy who becomes new capitaine is a really bad leader. He has no confidence in himself, he doesn’t trust others, he concerns less about the main target of the trip, and trust bad guys. In the end, not only he himself lost his life, lost his ship, but also let all his colleagues die. So from my point of view, a bad leader is weak and cowardly, not clear of the mission goal, and has no ability to judge good from bad.

I am controller right now, in my opinion, manager is the group of people who helps owner to operate the organization more fluently, me myself is just kind of this guy. We don’t need to be a leadership, we just follow the procedures for the company to make sure everything looks good. Owners, or CEO or chairman should be a leader, because they know exactly what is the goal for the company, what they want to achieve in the future, if not. I guess this company won’t be successful in the end.
