Now let’s begin the discussion: Below is the link to the book!!

The human eye is most sensitive over the same wavelength range at which the Sun emits the greatest intensity of radiation. The Sun is a G-type star; see Table 17.1 in Section 17.2 for this classification scheme.

Suppose creatures were to evolve on a planet orbiting a star somewhat hotter than the Sun, let’s say an average F-type star. Let’s also assume that the atmospheric properties of their planet are the same as we find on earth today. To what wavelength ranges, approximately, do you think their vision would most likely be sensitive to? Explain your reasoning. For full credit, you should explore at least one resource besides your textbook. Be sure to cite references used. What you read in Section 5.2, including Figure 5.8 will be useful to you in this activity.

In your own words is a journal entry that must consist of 100 word in length. Must use textbook. Please use all references. The link is above.

Consult Appendix I at the back of your textbook. Listed there some of the stars closest to us. Are most of these stars hotter or cooler than the Sun? Explain your reasoning

Discussion 1-

There are a number of reasons why a gene may appear in some individuals and not others. After you have read the assigned readings, you will have an understanding of how genes are inherited, and how the genotype (alleles) influences phenotypic characteristics (traits).

In this activity, you will demonstrate your understanding of the phenotypic expression of genes based on modes of inheritance. Explain the evolutionary significance of different modes of inheritance; for example an autosomal dominant allele which is lethal will not be passed on to future generations. The mode of inheritance, together with the properties and location of the gene, will determine how alleles are passed on to future generations.

For example, the gene for Huntington’s Disease is a genetic mutation of an autosomal gene. The allele is maintained in the population because the disease occurs late, at the end of a person’s reproductive years. While the mutation is lethal, it is persistent in the population. A test for the Huntington gene mutation is now available and this might lead to a significant reduction of the rate of Huntington’s Disease in the population. The inheritance of lethal autosomal gene mutations is rare because, in most cases, mutations will lead to early death and will not be passed on to future generations.

After you have posted your results and analysis, review two of your classmates’ posts and post a brief analysis. Do their ideas agree with yours? Explain why you agree or do not agree with their reasoning

Discussion 2- You can just pick a topic of your choice

The final report in this course will be a grant proposal for a biological research project. You will propose to conduct research in a biological discipline of your choosing and address the proposal to a funding agency (Excelsior College). The full proposal will be due the end of Module 8.

Participating in this activity will enable you to demonstrate your mastery of the module outcome #5.

You plan to pursue your interest in biology and conduct a research project. What research topic and questions are you interesting in pursuing? Please review topics we discussed in the first half of class, and look ahead at future course weeks as well. In addition, you may have taken other biology courses that stimulated your interest in certain research questions. For instance, you may be interested in the recent plight of amphibians in the Western Hemisphere and you may want to assess a local population of salamanders. Here is an example of a study (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. in Spain demonstrating the decline of mountain frogs due to the chytrid fungus (Bosch 2001).

Pick a subject of interest and read a current review article in the discipline to learn about the state of knowledge, research questions under investigation, and problems to be addressed. Consider a research question you could address in your project. For tips on how to develop a research question and writing resources access Excelsior Writing Resources (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. or Perdue OWL (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Share your ideas in a discussion response and add the review article on which you base your question. Comment on classmates’ posts and help them to narrow down their research question, find relevant sources, and refine their research questions (including any problems you can foresee).

The full directions for the research proposal and template are available at this link.
