Should all college campuses have gender neutral bathrooms?, communication assignment help

Argumentative Paper

For a large part of the semester, we’ve discussed and practiced the ways in which we can deliberate ethically about controversial issues. Hence, as ethical communicators, we focused on how to consider and argue different perspectives on particular issues. Now, it is your chance to give me your stance on an issue and try to persuade me why I should agree with your position.

Student Learning Outcomes:

SLO5: Identify and apply techniques for effectively communicating in a multicultural global society.

Directions:

First, choose the issue that appeals to you most and take a position on the issue:

  • Should all college campuses have gender neutral bathrooms?
  • Should all welfare recipients be tested for drugs?
  • Should performance enhancing drugs (such as steroids) be accepted in sports?

Then, answer the following questions:

  • What is your topic and why did you choose it?
  • What is your stance on the issue? Be specific. (Are you pro, con, or you somewhere the middle?)
    • Example: Should the federal government legalize marijuana?
      • Pro: Marijuana should be federally legalized.
      • Con: Marijuana should not be federally legalized.
      • Pro, but not fully pro: Marijuana should be federally legalized, but only if…
      • Con, but not fully con: Marijuana shouldn’t be federally legalized, but it should be decriminalized (ex. no jail time).
  • Why are you for or against this issue? At least two reasons required.
  • What is at least one argument that the other side makes? How do you refute it?
  • Why should I and others agree with you?
    • Consider: Does your side benefit more people than the other side? does your side harm less people than the other side?
