A project is successful when it achieves its objectives and meets or exceeds the expectations of the stakeholders. Stakeholders are individuals who either care about or have a vested interest in a project. They are the people who are actively involved with the work of the project or have something to either gain or lose as a result of the project. Stakeholder management is an important aspect of any project. Most projects we work on will involve multiple shareholders, and each one potentially has the ability to speed up, slow down or completely obstruct the progress. Stakeholders may not be in the driving seat, but they are extremely useful advocates, sponsors and agents of change. Often, the process of managing stakeholders is viewed by project managers as a form of risk management. After all, keeping shareholders happy and meeting their expectations will certainly reduce the risk of negative influences affecting the project. Having support from stakeholders puts more ideas on the table than would be the case if the development and implementation of the effort were confined to a single organization or to a small group of like-minded people. It includes varied perspectives from all sectors and elements of the community affected, thus giving a clearer picture of the community context and potential pitfalls and assets. The stakeholders for my project of change are the Physicians, Nurse Managers, Staff Nurses, Mental Heath Counselors, and Recreational Therapists in the units. It gains buy-in and support for the effort from all stakeholders by making them an integral part of its development, planning, implementation, and evaluation. It becomes their effort, and they’ll do their best to make it work. In order to secure support for my project from my stake holder I will meet with important stakeholders in advance of needing their formal approval, position the idea in terms of the benefits the audience stands to gain, answering questions concisely and confidently, avoid the assumption that the stakeholders will believe it’s a good idea just because I believe they are, avoid overwhelming the audience with detailed analysis or specific, and avoid getting defensive or angry when people challenges the idea. Preparation and knowledge is key for a successful change project implementation.
