Course Description: This course is an inquiry into the historical and changing role of sports in American Culture through novels, essays, biographies, films, documentaries and sports related poetry.
This course also addresses several specific discipline-related goals. It aims to help the student:
1)Summarize the historical, literary, and cinematic traditions of sports in American culture
2)Recount the difficulties athletes have faced due to race and/or gender in sports experiences
3)Identify and appreciate the role of sports in American culture
4)Achieve and describe insights into the context in which sports are performed and viewed
